A view of economic methodology. Economics uses logical and deductive methods to derive theoretical or policy propositions based on certain theoretical hypotheses, and then examines whether these propositions are correct through empirical or empirical analysis. Empirical economics holds that it is difficult or impossible to judge whether a theoretical hypothesis is correct or not, or whether it is a good hypothesis or a bad hypothesis, and that it is only once it has been determined through empirical analysis that the propositions derived deductively from the hypothesis are correct or not that it is possible to judge whether the initial hypothesis is correct or not, or whether it is good or bad.

経済学の方法論に関する一つの考え方。経済学は，ある理論的仮説にもとづいて，論理的･演繹（えんえき）的方法によって，理論的命題ないしは政策的命題を導き出し，経験的ないしは実証的分析を通じて，これらの命題が正しいかどうかということを検討する。実証経済学は，理論的仮説に関して，それが正しいか否か，あるいは良い仮説か悪い仮説かということを判断することは困難ないし不可能であって，その仮説から演繹的に導き出された諸命題が実証的な分析によって正しいか否かということがわかってはじめて，最初の仮説の正否，良悪についての判断が可能になるという考え方をとる。
