These compounds are difficult to absorb from the digestive tract even after neutralizing hydrochloric acid, and also act as a coating on the mucous membrane. These include magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide gel, gastric mucosa mucin, and ion exchange resins. They are unlikely to cause secondary acid secretion hyperactivity, and many of them have favorable properties as antacids.
