Kösem Sultan

Japanese: キョセム・スルタン(英語表記)Kösem Sultan
Kösem Sultan
Around 1589 - 1651
She was the wife of the 14th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Ahmed I (reigned 1603-17), and the mother of Sultans Murad IV and Ibrahim. She was a Greek woman known by the nickname Mahpeyker (meaning beautiful or attractive). She was a power-oriented woman who wielded great power as regent during the reigns of her sons as sultans, and her harem's political intervention led to the expulsion of capable officials and the deaths of many. Her bribery disrupted state affairs, and her extravagance depleted the national treasury. During Ibrahim's reign, endless fighting continued between Crete and Venice, which upset the country's fortunes.
