A village in Kurihara County, northwest of Miyagi Prefecture. Population 1,732 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Ichihasama River, which flows south from Mt. Kurikoma and empties into Lake Hanayama, and borders Akita Prefecture to the north. 95% of the village area is forest, making it one of the prefecture's leading timber producing areas. It has also long been known as a horse breeding area, taking advantage of the hills at the foot of Mt. Kurikoma, and dairy farming is currently thriving. In 1958, the construction of the Hanayama Dam on the Ichihasama River submerged the center of the village, causing a rapid decline in population. The population continued to leave the village, and in 1995 the population was less than half of what it was in 1960. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
