Macaw - Macaw (English spelling)

A general term for 19 species of birds in the order Psittacidae and family Psittacidae, which are characterized by their large beaks and extremely long tails. They are an extra-large parrot found in Central and South America. Although they are seed-eating, they are known for cracking hard nuts with their huge beaks. The 15 species of the genus Ana have a broad, bare face that continues from the beak, and the seven large species are 85-90 cm long, while the eight small species are 30-60 cm long. Among the large species, the Scarlet Macaw A. macao from Central and South America, the Blue-and-white Macaw A. ararauna from Brazil, the Green Macaw A. militaris from Mexico to South America, and the Green-and-white Macaw A. chloroptera from South America are well-known. They perch on tall trees and tall palms in tropical forests, build nests in their cavities, and the males and females live together for a long time. The three species of the genus Anodorhynchus include the Brazilian Hyacinth Macaw , A. hyacinthinus , the largest of the genus at 100cm in length, and the rare Brazilian Blue Macaw, Cyanopsitta spixii .

鳥綱オウム目オウム科に属する鳥のうち、嘴(くちばし)が巨大で尾が著しく長い特徴をもつ19種の総称。中央・南アメリカ産の、オウム目中で特大形のインコ類である。また、種子食であるが、その巨大な嘴で堅い木の実を割ることで知られる。コンゴウインコ属Ana15種は顔部が嘴に続き広く裸出し、大形の7種は体長85～90センチメートル、小形の8種は30～60センチメートルである。大形種のうち、中央・南アメリカ産のコンゴウインコA. macao、ブラジル産のルリコンゴウA. ararauna、メキシコから南アメリカ産のミドリコンゴウA. militaris、南アメリカ産のベニコンゴウA. chloropteraなどが著名で、熱帯林の高木や高いヤシなどに止まり、その洞に営巣し、雌雄は長くともに生活する。スミレコンゴウ属Anodorhynchus3種には、全長100センチメートルと本類中最大でブラジル産のスミレコンゴウA. hyacinthinusが含まれる。残る1種はブラジル産の希種アオコンゴウCyanopsitta spixiiである。
