Daughter of the Emperor. Under the current Imperial House Law, princesses and girls who are legitimate grandchildren of the Emperor in the male line are called Imperial Princesses. It is also stipulated that if female members of the Imperial Family, including princesses, marry a man who is not a member of the Imperial Family, they will lose their status as members of the Imperial Family. In recent years, as the number of members of the Imperial Family has decreased, it has become difficult to maintain Imperial Family activities, so the government is considering establishing a system whereby female members of the Imperial Family will be given the honorific title of Princess after marriage, and will continue to be involved in Imperial Family activities. In this case, Princesses will be positioned as national civil servants with a special position.

天皇の娘。現行の皇室典範では、皇女と嫡男系嫡出の皇孫(天皇の孫)である女子を内親王と称する。また、皇女を含む女性皇族は皇族以外の男性と結婚した場合、皇族の身分を離れると定めている。近年は皇族数の減少に伴い、皇室活動の維持が困難になってきていることから、政府は女性皇族が結婚した後に皇女の尊称を贈り、引き続き皇室活動に関わってもらう制度の創設を検討している。この場合、皇女は特別職の国家公務員と位置付けられる。
