Born in 1930, Demirci is a Turkish peasant writer. Born in a remote village in central Anatolia, he studied at a peasant school and became a teacher in his hometown after graduating. His work Bizim Köy (1950), which he wrote at the age of 17 and which vividly describes the rural life of the time, was later translated into Japanese and caused a great sensation. He was once imprisoned on suspicion of being a communist, but was saved by a campaign for his release by progressive intellectuals and returned to his teaching job.
