Eobacterium isolatum

Japanese: エオバクテリウム(英語表記)Eobacterium isolatum
Eobacterium isolatum
A bacterial fossil discovered in the Archean Swartkoppie Formation in the Barberton region of South Africa. This layer is the top of the Onverwacht Group, and its geological age is estimated to be 3.1 billion years old. Eo comes from the Greek words for dawn or primeval, and means the oldest bacteria. It was named by ES Berghorn and JW Schopf (1966), and their report states that it was found in the Fig Tree Group, but Schopf later corrected it as above. This fossil, measuring 0.5-0.7 x 0.2-0.3 μm, was found in chert using an electron microscope, and is thought to be a rod-shaped bacillus-type bacterium.
