Just as longitude and latitude are used to indicate points on Earth, locations on a planet's surface are expressed in terms of longitude and latitude. The point north of the point where the planet's axis of rotation intersects with the planet's surface is the planet's North Pole, and the point opposite is the South Pole. The line equidistant from these two points is the planet's equator. Latitude is measured in the same way as on Earth, with the equator being taken as 0° and going up to 90° north and south. Longitude is measured in the opposite direction to the planet's rotation, from 0° to 360°, and is measured starting from the origin at what appears to be the center of the planet's surface as seen from Earth at a particular time.

地球上の地点を示す場合に経度と緯度を用いたように，惑星表面上の場所をその惑星上の経度と緯度で表したもの。惑星の自転軸が惑星表面と交わった点の北側のものを，その惑星の北極とし，反対側の点を南極とする。これら二つの点と等距離にある線がその惑星の赤道である。緯度のはかり方は，地球と同様で，赤道を0゜にとって，南北90゜までである。経度はその惑星の自転と逆方向に0゜から360゜までとっていて，経度はある特定の時期に地球から見て惑星面上の中央に見えたものを原点にはかり始めている。
