The capital of Lara State in northwestern Venezuela. It is located about 250 km west-southwest of the capital Caracas, on the southern edge of the Segovia Highlands, on a broad river terrace of the Turbio River, which is part of the Orinoco River system. It is about 560 m above sea level. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in 1552. It is located at a key transportation point connecting the central and western parts of the country, and has long been a commercial center. It is currently the center of a vast agricultural area producing sisal, sugar cane, coffee, etc., and in addition to distributing agricultural products, industry developed in the 1960s, producing rope, thread, food, cement, ceramics, etc. The location of Centro Occidental University (1962). It is the terminus of the railway extending from Caracas, and the Pan-American Highway passes through it. Population 602,622 (1990).

ベネズエラ北西部，ララ州の州都。首都カラカスの西南西約 250km，セゴビア高地南縁にあり，オリノコ川水系に属するトゥルビオ川の広い河岸段丘に位置する。標高約 560m。同国最古の都市の一つで，1552年建設。同国の中央部と西部を結ぶ交通の要地にあり，古くから商業中心地として発展。現在はサイザルアサ，サトウキビ，コーヒーなどを産する広大な農業地帯の中心地で，農産物を集散するほか，1960年代には工業も発展，ロープ，糸，食品，セメント，陶器などを製造する。セントロ・オクシデンタル大学 (1962) 所在地。カラカスから延びる鉄道の終点で，パンアメリカン・ハイウェーが通る。人口 60万 2622 (1990) 。
