...It got its name from the fact that small grooves are dug at the borders of the collar, sleeves, obi, and other parts of the costume of a wooden doll, and then the ends of scraps of costume are glued and pressed into the grooves. It is said to have been invented by Takahashi Tadashige, a handmaiden at Kamo Shrine in Kyoto, during the Genbun era (1736-41) of the Edo period, using willow as the material, and it is also called Kamo doll or Kamogawa doll. It also became popular during the time of Tadashige's grandson Daihachi, so it is also called Daihachi doll. ...
