Medicine Box - Yakuro

A medicine box contains medicines made from roots, bark, and other plants ground into a fine powder using a mortar, as well as decoctions. They come in a variety of types, from luxurious ones made of vermilion to simple drawer boxes or stacked lacquered boxes. All of these were carried by servants when Chinese medicine practitioners visited patients' homes to examine them. The box was meant to hold dozens of different medicines. At the end of the Edo period, a type of inro with a lid called a medicine box buta was discovered, which may be an vestige of the medicine boxes of the Muromachi period.

草根木皮などを薬研(やげん)で細かい粉にした薬や、煎(せん)じ薬を入れた薬箱。堆朱(ついしゅ)製の豪華なものから、簡単な引き出し箱にしたもの、あるいは重ね箱にした塗り箱などがある。いずれも漢方医が病人の家へ診察に行くとき従僕に持参させた。箱の中には数十種の薬を入れておくものとされていた。江戸時代末に印籠(いんろう)の一種に薬籠蓋(ぶた)というかぶせ蓋があるが、これは室町時代の薬籠のおもかげを示すものであろう。
