A constellation that lies close to the southern horizon on spring evenings, adjacent to the southwest of Hydra. With no other visible stars than the 4th magnitude star α (alpha), it is difficult to picture the shape of the vacuum pump that 18th century French astronomer N. L. Lacaille envisioned. This constellation was created to commemorate the state-of-the-art vacuum pump at the time, which was improved by British physicist R. Boyle, known for Boyle's Law, and its former Japanese names include Air Pump and Exhaust Pump. However, the one depicted in Lacaille's star chart resembles an old-fashioned vacuum pump made by the Frenchman D. Papin.
