...In Aomori, large ornaments with gorgeous pictures are made (called "neputa" in Hirosaki), such as group nebuta (doll nebuta) and fan neputa in Hirosaki, and they have become summer tourist events, but it is said that they became larger in size around the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-30) of the Edo period. However, in Minmaya village, Higashitsugaru county, there is also a simple tradition in which children carry a lantern called Kusa-nebuta from each house every night, hanging it from a tree branch, and then float it in the sea on the 7th. In both the capital and countryside, the ornaments have candles lit inside, suggesting that they were originally lanterns for welcoming the Bon Festival, and are similar to Akita's Kanto. ...

…青森市では組ねぶた(人形ねぶた)，弘前市では扇ねぷたなど，華麗な絵を描いた大きな飾物が作られ(弘前では〈ねぷた〉という)，夏の観光行事となっているが，大型化したのは江戸時代の文化･文政期(1804‐30)ごろからといわれている。しかし，東津軽郡三厩（みんまや）村でのように，草ネブタといって木の枝に灯籠を下げたものを子どもたちが毎晩各家々を担いで回り，7日には海へ流すという素朴なものも各地で行われている。都鄙を問わず飾物には中にろうそくなどを点灯させ，これが元来は盆を迎えるための灯籠であったことをうかがわせ，秋田の竿灯（かんとう）などと共通している。…
