Karatsu Kiln

…At the end of the 16th century, multi-chambered climbing kilns, introduced from South Korea, began to be built in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. The Motoyashiki kiln site in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, which began firing Oribe ware in the early Keicho era (1596-1615), imitated these Karatsu kilns. It is a huge kiln with a total length of 25 meters, consisting of a combustion chamber and 14 firing chambers. This multi-chambered climbing kiln was used to fire ceramics from all over the country throughout the Edo period, and is a semi-continuous, down-firing kiln. …
