Born: February 2, 1700, near Königsberg
Died December 12, 1766. German critic. Professor of poetry at the University of Leipzig. A central figure in the early Enlightenment. In his Versuch einer critischen Dichtkunst (1730), he developed a theory modeled on French classical literature. He also founded the German Studies Association and worked hard to purify the national language, while also directing theater companies and working to reform theater. However, he was viewed with hostility by young literary figures, and after being criticized by Lessing and Goethe in particular, he was seen as a representative of the negative side of the Enlightenment.
