The largest of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Territory of Spain. Area: 2,053 km2. Due to its proximity to Africa and its warm climate, and its beautiful natural surroundings, it has developed as a tourist destination. In the center of the island stands the majestic snow-capped Teide volcano (Spain's highest peak, 3,718 m), and on the west coast is a rare orchid garden, found in the Canary Islands. The island's industries are agriculture and fishing. The administrative centre is the port city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (population 185,899, 1982) in the east, which has an oil refinery and a tobacco factory.
