Japanese: 本朝高僧伝 - ほんちょうこうそうでん

Biographies of Japanese monks. Written by Shiban. 75 volumes. Completed in 1702 (Genroku 15). Consists of a general summary, a preface, and the main text, and contains biographies of 1,664 people. In addition to biographies of eminent monks related to the Sanron, Hosso, Kusha, Jojitsu, Kegon, Vinaya, Ken, Mikkyo, Zen, and Jodo, it also contains biographies of gods, immortals, and virtuous people, but does not mention Shinran or Nichiren. With a wealth of material and fair use of it, this is an indispensable book for the study of the history of Japanese Buddhism.

日本の僧侶の伝記。師蛮著。 75巻。元禄 15 (1702) 年成立。総目，巻首，本文で構成され，1664人の人々についての伝記が記されている。三論，法相，倶舎，成実，華厳，律，顕，密，禅，浄土に関する高僧の伝記のほかに，明神，仙人，高徳な人の伝記も載せているが，親鸞と日蓮については触れていない。資料が豊富でしかも公正に使用しているところから，日本仏教史の研究には不可欠の書。
