Biographies of Japanese monks. Written by Shiban. 75 volumes. Completed in 1702 (Genroku 15). Consists of a general summary, a preface, and the main text, and contains biographies of 1,664 people. In addition to biographies of eminent monks related to the Sanron, Hosso, Kusha, Jojitsu, Kegon, Vinaya, Ken, Mikkyo, Zen, and Jodo, it also contains biographies of gods, immortals, and virtuous people, but does not mention Shinran or Nichiren. With a wealth of material and fair use of it, this is an indispensable book for the study of the history of Japanese Buddhism.
