Andy Warhol

A representative American pop art painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Czechoslovakian immigrant parents, his father was a miner. After studying painting and design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he worked as a designer in New York. His delicate line drawings had earned him recognition in the commercial design world by the late 1950s. However, his fame really took hold in the early 1960s, when he became acquainted with Jasper Johns, who was creating cool, flat paintings as a reaction to Abstract Expressionism, and decided to become a painter.

From this time on, he shocked the art world with his silkscreen paintings of mass-produced and mass-distributed images of everyday objects, such as a comic strip, the Campbell Soup brand, a dollar bill, a scene from a newspaper photo, or a movie actress. His method of disinterestedly transferring other people's photographs as if they were "found objects" is cool and emotionless, revealing a lack of individuality and anonymity, and his compositions are characterized by the mechanical and infinite repetition and proliferation of the same images. In fact, he called his studio, a renovated warehouse building on West 47th Street in New York, "the Factory," where he mass-produced paintings by copying, and from 1963 he also began making experimental films. His early films, such as "Sleep" (1963), "Empire" (1964), and "Chelsea Girls" (1966), were shot over long periods of time with a fixed camera, and left to the camera's records without any editing by the artist, and like his paintings, he tried to keep the artist's expression to a minimum. This idea can be said to have anticipated subsequent minimalist art.

In 1968, she was shot by Valerie Solanas, a radical feminist who also appeared in Warhol's films, at her new workplace in Union Square West, with the intent of assassinating her, and was seriously injured but narrowly escaped death. By that time, her sphere of activity had expanded significantly, she had formed the rock group "Velvet Underground" and was already a star in the art world of the 1960s, putting on her own light shows with original video footage.

His later paintings showed changes such as portraits of friends using photographic transfers and citations to classic works of the past, but he also produced commercial films such as Frankenstein and Dracula in 1973, and published his own monthly magazine, Interview, among other things. As a pop artist, he was active in a wide range of fields, spanning both art and popular culture.

He died shortly after undergoing gallbladder surgery in 1987. In 1994, the Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh.

アメリカのポップ・アートの代表的画家、立体作家、映画製作者。ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグでチェコスロバキア移民の両親のもとに生まれた。父親は鉱夫をしていた。同地のカーネギー工科大学で絵画、デザインを学んだのち、デザイナーとしてニューヨークで働く。繊細な線描によるイラストにより、1950年代末までにはコマーシャル・デザインの世界で知名度を得ていた。しかし、その名声を決定的なものにしたのは、抽象表現主義の反動としてクールで平面的な絵画を制作していたジャスパー・ジョーンズなどの知己を得て、画家に転進を図った1960年代初頭からである。

　このころから漫画の一こま、キャンベル・スープの商標、ドル紙幣、新聞の報道写真の一場面、映画女優のブロマイドなど大量生産・大量伝達される通俗な日常品のイメージをシルクスクリーンで拡大転写する絵画によって、画壇に衝撃を与えた。他人の写真を「みいだされたオブジェ」のように無関心に転写する手法はクールで感情を排除し、非個性的な匿名性をあらわにするもので、その構図も同じイメージを機械的に無限に反復・増殖させる特徴をもつ。事実、彼はニューヨークの西47丁目の倉庫用ビルを改装したアトリエを「ファクトリー（工場）」とよび、複写による絵画を量産し、1963年からは実験映画の製作にも乗り出した。初期の映画作品『スリープ』（1963）、『エンパイア』（1964）から『チェルシー・ガールズ』（1966）などは、固定カメラを用いて長時間撮影し、作者が手を加えず無編集のままカメラの記録のみに委ねるもので、その絵画と同様、作者の表現を最低限に抑制しようとするものである。この発想は、その後のミニマル・アートを先取りしたものといえよう。

　1968年、ウォーホルの映画にも出演した過激な女権拡張論者バレリー・ソラナスによって、ユニオン・スクエア・ウェストに移した新しい仕事場で殺害目的の狙撃(そげき)を受け、瀕死(ひんし)の重傷を負ったが、九死に一生を得た。そのころには活動領域は大きく広がり、ロック・グループ「ベルベット・アンダーグラウンド」を結成し、独自の映像によるライト・ショーを興行化するなど、すでに60年代芸術のスター的存在となっていた。

　その後の絵画には、写真転写による友人の肖像、過去の名作からの引用などの変化がみられるが、他方、1973年にフランケンシュタイン、ドラキュラなどの商業映画の製作も手がけ、個人的な月刊誌『インタビュー』を主宰して著作を発表するなど、ポップ・アーティストとして芸術と大衆文化の両面またがる幅広い活動を行った。

　1987年、胆嚢(たんのう)手術を受けた直後に死去。1994年、ピッツバーグにアンディ・ウォーホル美術館が開館した。
