A four-legged dining table. Usually square or round, the legs are often foldable. As the name suggests, this table is a table for tablecloths, introduced into everyday life, and the name chabu is said to come from the Chinese pronunciation of zhuō fú, which originally meant tablecloth. For Japanese people, who traditionally ate meals on individual plates, the tablecloth dining style, where several people sat around one table and shared food, was quite unusual and shocking, but eventually the advantages of this style came to be recognized by a wider class of people, and it came to be used in everyday family life where class discrimination was not necessary.
