Born December 17, 1807 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Died: September 7, 1892, Hampton Falls, Massachusetts. American poet and abolitionist. Born into a Quaker farming family, he began writing poetry as a child, after reading the poetry of R. Barnes. He published a collection of poems and prose works he wrote while working as an editor for various magazines, titled Legends of New England (1831). Around the time of the Civil War, he became an ardent opponent of slavery, and wrote poems such as Barbara Frietchie (64) and Laus Deo! (65). In his later years, he also wrote many religious poems as a devout Quaker. Other works include the famous long poem Snow-Bound (66), which sings of rural life in New England. Whittier |
