Zakariyā ibn Muammad ibn Mamūd, abu Yayā al-Qazwīnī

A Persian-born Arabic encyclopedia writer, he was compared to Pliny the Elder for his wealth of knowledge and lack of critical thinking. In his encyclopedia, 'Ajā'ib al-mukhlūqāt wa-gharā'ib al-mawjādīt (The Wonders of Living Things and Their Peculiarities), he deals with planets, stars, angels, ages, the four elements, minerals, plants, animals, and humans, while 'Ajā'ib al-buldān (The Wonders of the Countries) and Āthār al-bilād wa-akhbār alk-'ibād (The History of the Servants of God) are mainly concerned with geography. Although these works seem to be a jumble of knowledge, they were valuable sources of information about the time.

ペルシア出身でアラビア語による百科事典の作家。その豊富な知識と批判力の不足から、プリニウスGaius Plinius Secundusと比較された。その百科事典の『生きもののふしぎとその特異性』'Ajā'īb al-mukhlūqāt wa-gharā'ib al-mawjādītでは、惑星、恒星、天使、年代、四元素、鉱物、植物、動物、人間を扱い、『諸国のふしぎ』'Ajā'ib al-buldānと『国々のあとかたと神のしもべの歴史』Āthār al-bilād wa-akhbār alk-'ibādでは、おもに地理学を扱っている。これらの知識は寄せ集めのがらくたのようであるが、当時を知るための貴重な資料となった。
