Honshoji Temple

Japanese: 本証寺 - ほんしょうじ

A Shinshu Otani sect temple located in Nodera-cho, Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the three Mikawa temples, and its mountain name is Unryu-zan. Its founder, Kyoen, was a Tendai monk from the Oyama clan in Shimotsuke, but is said to have converted to Shinran in Mikawa. Its collection includes the late Kamakura period paintings "Zenko-ji Nyorai Eden" and "Prince Shotoku Eden" (both Important Cultural Properties), as well as two volumes of "Kyogyoshinshoensho" with a colophon dated 1355, proving the temple's ancient founding. During the seventh head priest, Kuen, the temple converted to Rennyo, and became the center of the Mikawa Hongan-ji sect. It is well known that 115 samurai followers signed a joint petition of followers in 1549 (Tenbun 18), and this nature of the Honshoji followers led to conflict with Tokugawa Ieyasu, who wanted to organize these indigenous samurai into a vassal group, which led to the Mikawa Ikko Ikki Uprising that began in 1563 (Eiroku 6).

愛知県安城市野寺町にある真宗大谷派の寺。三河三ヵ寺の一つで，山号は雲竜山。開基慶円（きようえん）は下野小山（おやま）氏出身の天台僧であったが，三河で親鸞に帰依したと伝える。鎌倉末期の《善光寺如来絵伝》《聖徳太子絵伝》(いずれも重要文化財)や，文和4年(1355)の奥書のある《教行信証延書》2冊を蔵しており，開創の古さを裏づける。7代空円のときに蓮如に帰依し，三河本願寺派の中心となった。1549年(天文18)の門徒連判状に武士門徒115名が署名していることは有名で，このような本証寺門徒団の性格は，これら土着武士団を家臣団に組織しようとする徳川家康との対立を生み，1563年(永禄6)に始まる三河一向一揆となった。
