Bomb gourd - Cyclanthera explodens Naud.
Native to tropical America, this is an annual creeping plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. The creeping stems grow to about 3m, are hairless, and have tendrils that wrap around other objects. The leaves are alternate, triangular-oval, 6-9cm long, sometimes slightly lobed and slightly concave at the base, with long petioles and slightly hairy. It is monoecious, with male flowers forming panicles and female flowers growing solitary. The fruit is fleshy, round, often curved, about 2.5cm long, and has hard thorns on the surface. When the fruit ripens, it scatters seeds far away. The scientific name explodens means to scatter vigorously.
