Ibaragani (Lithodes turritus)

Japanese: イバラガニ(荆蟹) - イバラガニ（英語表記）Lithodes turritus

A species of the family Lithodidae in the class Crustacea, it is crab-shaped but is classified as an Anomura (hermit crab). It is endemic to Japan, found at depths of 300 to 600 meters from Sagami Bay to Tosa Bay. It is often mistakenly called red king crab. The carapace is 20 cm wide. The carapace is purple-brown, while the carapace edge, chelipeds, and ambulatory legs are red, and it is sometimes called red crab. The rostrum is long and slender, protruding almost horizontally and bifurcating at the tip. A pair of spines protrude from the center of the rostrum, pointing slightly dorsally. There are four cone-shaped protrusions in the stomach region and cardiac region, two in the gill region, eight on each side edge, and four on the rear edge.

甲殻綱タラバガニ科の1種で，カニ型であるが分類学的には異尾類(ヤドカリ類)に属する。相模湾から土佐湾の水深300～600mに分布する日本固有種。タラバガニと誤称されることも多い。甲幅20cm。甲は紫褐色，甲縁，はさみ脚，歩脚は紅色で，アカガニと呼ばれることもある。額角は細長く，ほぼ水平に突出して先端が二叉（にさ）する。額角の中央部に1対のとげがやや背側を向いて出ている。胃域，心域に各四つ，鰓域（さいいき）に二つ，側縁に各八つ，後縁に四つの円錐形の突起がある。
