1858‐1943 A Russian and Soviet theater figure. He studied physics and mathematics at Moscow University, but became more and more interested in theater, began writing theater reviews, and eventually made a living writing novels and plays. After experiencing the staging of his own works, he realized the need for reform in theater arts, and so he headed the drama department at the Moscow Philharmonic School, aiming to train actors who could give form to plays with high literary content, rather than just skilled actors who were suitable for vulgar social dramas. This soon led to his meeting with Stanislavsky, and together they founded the Moscow Art Theatre in 1898. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
