A sac-like structure of lymphatic tissue found on the dorsal side just inside the cloaca in young birds. It was named after the Italian anatomist Fabricius, who described it in 1621 (published posthumously). The bursa of Fabricius is found only in birds, and plays an essential role in the development of antibodies in birds. The bursa of Fabricius in chickens begins to differentiate on about the fourth day of incubation, and tissue differentiation is almost complete by the time the chicken hatches. The size of the sac then reaches its maximum 2 to 3 months after hatching, after which it atrophies and disappears with sexual maturity.
