The capital of the Yukon Territory, Canada. It is located near the rapids of the upper Yukon River. It was a distribution center for fur animals, but a settlement was established during the Klondike Gold Rush (1897-98), and developed as the terminus of Yukon River shipping and railroads. It is still a key transportation point along the Alaska Highway and an air route hub. It became the provincial capital in 1952. It is the headquarters of the Yukon Mounted Police. The MacBride Museum in the city displays artifacts from the pioneer era, and many log houses remain. Copper was mined here from 1900 to 1920, and during World War II, there was a refinery for crude oil delivered by pipeline from the Northwest Territories. In 1958, a hydroelectric dam was built on the rapids of the Yukon River. The population changes seasonally, with large influxes of tourists and mining and construction workers in the summer. Population: 17,925 (1991). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
