...It was a field of study that began in mid-19th century Europe, focusing on early Islamic religion and history, based on the methodology of historical textual criticism that had been established in the fields of classical studies, biblical studies, and especially history. It eventually expanded its scope to cover the entire output of Muslim religious, historical, and cultural activities. In this sense, the man who deserves the title of founder of Islamic studies is Gustav Weil (1808-89), who moved from philology to history and became the first Jew to hold the position of professor of Oriental studies at a European university. His series of works, starting with "The Life of Muhammad" (1843), through "A Historical and Critical Introduction to the Quran" (1844), to "The History of the Caliphs" in three volumes (1846-51) and two supplementary volumes (1860, 62), marked the birth of Islamic studies. ...
