The central city of the Upper Silesian industrial region in southern Poland. In addition to the largest coal reserves in Europe, the city also produces iron ore and zinc, and is home to metallurgy, machinery, and chemical industries. The large Katowice Steelworks, established in the eastern suburbs in the late 1970s, contributed greatly to the city's economic growth, but also caused environmental problems. In 1742 it became part of Prussia, and in 1921 it became part of Poland. After World War II, it was briefly called Stalinogrud. Population: 310,800 (2011).
