A popular literary magazine published by Kodansha in November 1911 by Noma Seiji. It was forced to shift from its original focus on lecturer storytelling to "written storytelling," which in turn created momentum for the later rise of popular literature. Yoshikawa Eiji was one of the writers who first made his mark on the world through this magazine. After World War II, it ceased publication in February 1946 out of consideration for the occupying forces' policy of eliminating feudalism. It was revived with the January 1949 issue, and postwar writers were added to the writing staff, but the December 1962 issue announced the launch of "Shosetsu Gendai," before ceasing publication.
