Rig Veda (English spelling)

One of the four Vedas, the holy books of ancient Indian Brahmanism. Rig means "hymn." In the Brahmanic tradition, the Rig belongs to the hotṛ priests, who invite the gods to the ceremonial grounds and praise them during rituals. It was compiled over a period of several hundred years, mainly around 1200-1000 BC. The Samhita (main collection) of the Rig Veda is a compilation of ṛṛc, or hymns to the gods, and as the oldest document in India, it is considered the most important document for understanding the religion of ancient India.

古代インドのバラモン教の聖典〈ベーダ〉4種のうちの一つ。リグとは〈賛歌〉の意。バラモン教の伝統では，祭式において神々を祭場に招請し，神々をたたえるホートリhotṛ祭官に属する。前1200‐前1000年を中核とする数百年の間に成立した。《リグ･ベーダ》の〈サンヒター(本集)〉は，〈リチュṛc〉すなわち神々への賛歌を集大成したものであるが，インド最古の文献として，古代インドの宗教を知るうえで最も重要視されている。
