R ( f , g ) = 0 is true if and only if a0 = b0 = 0 or f ( x ) and g ( x ) have a common factor. In particular, if we consider the case of g (x ) = f '( x ) = df ( x )/ dx , then with a0 ≠ 0, R ( f , f ') = 0 is true if f ( x ) = 0 and f '( x ) = 0 have a common root, that is, f ( x ) has a multiple root.
