_{The determinant R(f,g) of two polynomials f(x) = a0xn + a1xn-1 + ... + an} _, _the ^{matrix for the coefficients of g(x) = b0xm + b1xm -1} ⁺ ^... + bm , is called the _resultant of f ( x ⁾ and g ( _x ) _. R ( f , g ) = 0 is true if and only if a0 ₌ b0 = ₀ or f ( x ) and g ( x ) have a common factor. In particular, if we consider the case of g (x ) = f '( x ) = df ( x )/ dx , then with a0 _≠ 0, R ( f , f ') = 0 is true if f ( x ) = 0 and f '( x ) = 0 have a common root, that is, f ( x ) has a multiple root.

二つの多項式f(x)＝a₀xⁿ＋a₁x^n－1＋……＋a_n,g(x)＝b₀x^m＋b₁x^m－1＋……＋b_mの係数についての行列，の行列式R(f,g)を，f(x)とg(x)の終結式という。R(f,g)＝0となるのは，a₀＝b₀＝0であるかf(x)とg(x)が共通因子をもつときであり，そのときに限る。とくに，g(x)＝f′(x)＝df(x)/dxの場合を考えれば，a₀≠0として，R(f,f′)＝0となるのは，f(x)＝0とf′(x)＝0が共通根をもつ，すなわちf(x)が重根をもつときである。
