A city in the eastern part of Thessaly (ancient Thessaly) region, central Balkan, Greece. It is a port city located at the head of the Gulf of Pagasitikos in the Aegean Sea, about 170 km north-northwest of Athens, and mainly ships grains, wine, cotton, chromite, tobacco, olives, olive oil, etc., which are produced in the Thessaly region. The old city, located on the hills at the foot of Mount Pelion behind the city, is the site of Iolkos, which was the center of the region during the Mycenaean period, and its ruins have been unearthed since 1956 through excavations. To the south of the city are the ruins of Pagasai, which flourished from the Mycenaean period to the end of the Classical period, and Demetrias, built by Macedonia in 293 BC. The new city, which spreads along the coast, developed mainly after the city was ceded to Greece by the Ottoman Empire in 1881. It is connected to Larissa by rail and connected to the main railroad line connecting Athens and Thessaloniki. Population: 71,378 (1981).

ギリシア，バルカン半島部中部，セサリア (古代名テッサリア) 地方東部の都市。アテネの北北西約 170km，エーゲ海のパガシティコス湾の湾奥に位置する港湾都市で，おもにセサリア地方に産する穀類，ワイン，綿花，クロム鉄鉱，タバコ，オリーブ，オリーブ油などを積出す。背後のピリオン山麓の丘陵に位置する旧市街は，ミケーネ時代にこの地方の中心地であったイオルコスのあったところで，1956年以降の発掘によりその遺跡が出土している。市の南にはミケーネ時代から古典期末まで繁栄したパガサイ，前 293年マケドニアが建設したデメトリアスの遺跡もある。海岸沿いに広がる新市街は，おもに 1881年市がオスマン帝国からギリシアに割譲されたのち発展した。ラリサと鉄道で結ばれ，アテネとセサロニキを結ぶ幹線鉄道に連絡。人口7万 1378 (1981) 。
