Japanese: 丸太小屋 - まるたごや（英語表記）log cabin

A cabin made of assembled logs, it became a symbol of the pioneering spirit in America during the pioneering era. It was introduced to the New World by the Swedes, who settled in the lower Delaware River area around 1638. It was a building method used in the forested areas of their homeland, where freshly felled logs were stacked horizontally, the roof was also made of logs, wooden nails were driven into the tenons (as iron nails were not available), and mud or wood chips were packed into the gaps. Although it had only one or two rooms, it was sturdy and had good insulation, so it was eventually adopted by colonists from other countries and spread to the western frontier (however, in the prairie areas where there are no forests, sod houses were built).

丸太を組み合わせて作る小屋で，開拓時代のアメリカでは開拓精神の象徴となった。新大陸にこれを伝えたのは，1638年ごろデラウェア川下流に植民したスウェーデン人であった。彼らの故郷の森林地帯の建築法で，伐採したばかりの丸太を横組みにして積み，屋根も丸太でふき，枘（ほぞ）の部分に(鉄釘がないため)木釘を打ち込み，すきまには泥や木屑などを詰めた。部屋は一つか二つだが，がんじょうで，保温がよく，やがてほかの国からの植民者もこれを採用，西部のフロンティアにもひろまった(ただし，森林のない大草原地帯では，芝土の家sod houseがつくられた)。
