1877‐1935 Austrian musicologist. Raised in a musical family in Vienna, he received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1900. The following year he moved to the University of Berlin, where he studied comparative musicology under C. Stumpf, a field that was then gaining popularity. In the autumn of that year he recorded the music of the Otojiro Kawakami and Sadayakko troupe during their Berlin performance, and also interviewed them. In 2003, together with his colleague Otto Abraham (1872-1926), he published A Study on the Sound Structure and Music of the Japanese, marking his debut in the musicological world.
