Gran Colombia (English spelling)

The Republic of Colombia was founded in 1819 by S. Bolivar in the north of South America. It was intended to facilitate independence from Spain and to provide an effective response to the United States. In February 1819, representatives including Bolivar met in Angostura (now Ciudad Bolivar) and resolved to unite Venezuela, New Granada (Colombia), and Ecuador into a single, powerful, centralized state.

S.ボリーバルが南アメリカ大陸北部に創設したコロンビア共和国República de Colombiaの後世の通称。スペインからの独立を容易にし，アメリカ合衆国に効果的に対応することを意図したもの。1819年2月ボリーバルをはじめとする代表者がアンゴストゥーラ(現，シウダード･ボリーバル)で会議し，ベネズエラ，ヌエバ･グラナダ(コロンビア)およびエクアドルを合併して単一の強力な中央集権国家を建設することを決議した。
