Looking at the annual variation in average monthly precipitation, there are some months with more and less precipitation that are clearly defined, and the rainy season refers to the period with the most precipitation among these. Broadly speaking, there are two types of rainy season: those in the summer and those in the winter. In savanna climates and tropical monsoon climates such as India and Southeast Asia, the rainy season with most precipitation (monsoon) occurs in the summer. On the other hand, in temperate winter rain climates, the rainy season occurs in winter due to the influence of fronts and low pressure systems. In Japan, the difference between the rainy season and the dry season is somewhat unclear, but on the Pacific side there is the rainy season, the autumn rains, and the typhoon season, and on the Sea of Japan side there is also a rainy season with relatively clear snowfall in winter.
