This is a collection of poems by Fujiwara Teika. "Shuui" is the Chinese name for chamberlain, and is the name of Teika's official title. The three volumes, upper, middle and lower, were completed in 1216 (Kenpo 4), and were subsequently expanded until 1233 (Tenpuku 1), when he became a monk. The upper volume contains 15 types of 100 poems, from 100 poems for beginners to 100 poems for the Chancellor and Left Minister's family, the middle volume contains 12 works, from 128 rhymed poems to a folding screen poem for the Empress's entry into the Imperial Court, and the lower volume contains poems in the categories of seasons, celebrations, love and miscellaneous. This collection includes most of Teika's compositions from his long career as a poet, from his apprenticeship in his late teens to the Bunji and Kenkyu periods (1185-11999) when he struggled to break new ground and was praised by the public as "Dharma poems." The extant versions are: (1) the autograph version (Teika's own handwritten version, reprinted in Fujiwara Teika Zenkashu, edited by Reizei Tameomi, Bunmeisha, 1940), (2) the Raita version (a draft version written by Teika himself), and (3) the Rokukashu version (an autograph version with later additions). Volume 1 of Shui Guso Ingai was added early on after the completion of the main three volumes, and the majority of the collection was completed around 1237 (Kasei 3). The Fujikawa Hyakushu at the end of the volume was added later.
