?-1124 He was the first da'i (propagandist, missionary) of the Nizari sect in Iran, and the founder of the so-called Assassin sect. He was born in Qom and studied under Rey. He became an Ismaili da'i in 1072, and in 1078 went to the Fatimid court in Egypt. He then engaged in missionary work throughout Iran. In 1090, he captured the fortress of Alamūt in the Elburz Mountains in northern Iran, and eventually expanded his influence to Dayram, Koumis, Khuhistan, and Syria. In 1094, when the issue of succession to the Fatimid caliph arose, he broke off ties with the dynasty in support of the deposed Nizār (?-1096), and formed the Nizari sect.
