Sāmaveda (English spelling)

Japanese: サーマ・ベーダ(英語表記)Sāmaveda
Sāmaveda (English spelling)
A Brahmanic scripture, one of the four Vedas. It contains melodious hymns, or sāman, sung in rituals, and belongs to the Udgātṛ priests, who are in charge of singing. It is said that the Vedas were once divided into a thousand schools, but three schools of writing remain today. The collection, or Samhita, is divided into the ārcika, which contains only the lyrics of the hymns, and the gāna, which uses special notations to indicate the melody and the length and repetition of syllables that occur when singing.
