1886‐1964 A Dutch ethnologist and professor at Leiden University, he was a leader of the so-called Leiden School. He initially studied linguistics under CC Uhlenbeck and was attached to the American and African departments of the Leiden Museum of Ethnology, but later moved to Leiden University. In 1933-34 he conducted research in eastern Indonesia. He was strongly influenced by the French sociology of Durkheim and Mauss, and, stimulated by his colleague at the museum, WH Lascelles, he established his own unique Dutch structuralism.
