Swiss zoologist and anthropologist. Born in Basel, after graduating from the University of Basel, he studied the comparative morphology and comparative development of birds, mammals, and marine animals at universities in Munich, Paris, and Berlin, as well as at marine research stations in various locations. In 1931 he became a professor at the University of Basel, and in 1947 became its rector. He also developed theories on human beings, education, and art based on biology, and is well-known as a researcher of Goethe. His major works include Comparative Morphology of Vertebrates (1976) and On Living Things (1973).
