The capital of Rio Grande do Sul state in southern Brazil. It is located on the left bank of the Guaíba River. Population: 1,237,223 (1991). In the early 1740s, in order to defend the southern part of the Brazilian colony against the Spanish based in Buenos Aires, the city was originally called Porto dos Casais (Couple's Port), because immigrant families were invited from the Azores to settle in the surrounding area. In 1773, it was given its present name, which means "Delightful Port". Due to its strategic location, which allowed it to control the connection between the open sea and the inland areas via lakes and rivers, it was a central city in southern Brazil from the beginning.
