1722‐76 French physician. Born in Iseste to a physician's son, he studied at the Montpellier Medical School, earning his degree in 1743. In 1746 he began practicing medicine at the Charité Hospital in Paris, and in 1749 he became supervisor of mineral springs in Béarn, where he advocated for the therapeutic effects of mineral springs. In 1752 he entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris, and in 1754 he obtained his degree again, opening a practice in Paris, because at the time a rule required a degree from the University of Paris to open a practice there. However, following the vitalism of the Montpellier School, he placed emphasis on the "natural force la nature" inherent in living organisms.
