A city in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the alluvial plains of the Ota River and its tributaries, and faces the Enshu Nada Sea. The city center developed as a post town on the Tokaido, and is served by the Tokaido Main Line. To the north is the Fukuroi Interchange of the Tomei Expressway, which opened in 1969. It is a production and distribution center for tea, greenhouse melons, and rice, and industries such as electrical equipment, chemicals, transportation equipment, and musical instruments have developed. It is home to the Soto Zen temples Kasuisai, Yusanji, and Son'eiji. Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa, a venue for the FIFA World Cup, is located in the eastern part of the city. 静岡県南西部の市。1958年市制。太田川とその支流の沖積地を占め,遠州灘に臨む。中心市街は東海道の宿場町として発達,東海道本線が通じ,北部に1969年開通の東名高速道路袋井インターチェンジがある。茶,温室メロン,米の産地・集散地で,電気機器,化学,輸送用機器,楽器などの工業が発展している。曹洞宗の寺可睡斎,油山寺,尊永寺がある。東部にサッカーワールドカップ会場の静岡スタジアムエコパがある。2005年4月磐田郡浅羽町を編入。108.33km2。8万4846人(2010)。
