A town in Kitasoma County in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 45,821 (1995). Located on the north bank of the Tone River, the Kinu River flows south in the west and joins the Tone River, and the Kokai River flows along the northern border. The Kanto Railway Jōsō Line and National Route 294 run through the center of the town, as does the Joban Expressway. In the early modern period, the town flourished as a key point for river traffic, and there were many riverside merchants in Nogisaki in particular. Until the late 1950s, the town was a farming village centered on rice and vegetable cultivation, but since it is within 40 km of central Tokyo and the Jōsō Line is directly connected to JR Joban Line Toride Station, the number of commuters heading towards Tokyo has increased, leading to large-scale housing development and a continuing rise in population.
