Donald Barthelme

American short story writer and novelist. Son of a famous architect, he worked extensively as a film and music critic and editor-in-chief of a literary magazine while studying at the University of Houston, but after moving to New York after serving as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, he became independent as a writer. He published a series of philosophical, pop and funny short stories, mainly for The New Yorker, and was enthusiastically supported by intellectual and sensual young people. His art, which combines fragments of words flying around in modern times in a collage style, often deals with surreal scenes, and captures the daily life of modern city life with a strange reality. He was highly regarded in the academic world, and was seen as a flag-bearer of new fiction along with Barth and others. His short story collections include "Come Home, Dr. Caligari" (1964), "Unspeakable Habits, Strange Deeds" (1968), "City Life" (1970), and "Sorrow" (1972), while his medium- to long-length works include "Snow White" (1967), "Dead Father" (1975), and his final work, "The King" (1990).

アメリカの短編作家、小説家。著名な建築家を父とし、ヒューストン大学在学中から、映画・音楽批評、文芸誌編集長と幅広く活動したが、現代美術館のディレクターを経てニューヨークに渡ってからは作家として自立。『ニューヨーカー』誌を中心に、哲学的であると同時にポップでおかしい短編を次々と発表し、知的で感覚的な若い層の熱い支持を受けた。現代に乱れ飛ぶことばの断片をコラージュ風に貼(は)り合わせてみせる彼のアートは、しばしばシュールな情景を扱いながら、現代の都市生活の日常を奇妙なリアリティーを込めてすくいあげる。アカデミックな世界での評価は非常に高く、バースらとともにニュー・フィクションの旗手と目された。短編集に『帰れ、カリガリ博士』（1964）、『口に出せない習慣、奇妙な行為』（1968）、『都市生活』（1970）、『悲しみ』（1972）など、中・長編に『雪白姫(ゆきしろひめ)』（1967）と『死父』（1975）および遺作となった『王』（1990）がある。
