Taro Kinojo
Year of death: April 23, 1799 (May 27, 1799)
Year of birth: Enkyo 4.1.8 (1747.2.17)
He was a wealthy merchant in the mid-Edo period, the fourth head of the Mitsui family of the Minami clan in Kyoto, and is famous as a patron of puppet theater. He is a Joruri writer and a Kyoka writer. His real name was Mitsui Takanari. Kijo Taro was his Joruri writer name. His other name Mitsutama is evocative of his family business and activities in the three capitals (Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo). His Kyoka name was Senkatei Yukosai Kakuri. As a Joruri writer, he wrote a total of five pieces, including collaborations, four in Edo during the An'ei period and one in Osaka in 1799. His works "Itozakura Honmachi Iku" and "Go Taiheiki Shiroishi Banashi" were particularly well received, and were also adapted for Kabuki. For the latter, he made an effort to research the dialect by listening to the dialect of people from Shiroishi (Miyagi Prefecture) and sending one of his collaborators, Karasutei Enma, to the area. At the age of 20, he became a disciple of Kurikatei Kibata, a senior disciple of Taiya Teiryu, and was familiar with Kyoka poetry throughout his life. His compilations, such as Kyoka Teiryu-den and the travelogue Kitakuni Jinoki, are included in the Kuri Complete Works. <References> Edo Sakusa Jorurishu (Edo Bunko Collection, Volume 15)
