An ancient Greek skeptical philosopher. Born in Pitane, Asia Minor. He rejected the metaphysical teachings of Platonic philosophy, left the Old Academy, and founded the New Academy. He set the goal of philosophy as skeptical epochē, but unlike Pyrrho, he understood this not simply as ethics (an attitude of the mind), but as a pure theory, and rather saw it as a legacy of Socrates and Plato. Since there was no standard for distinguishing the truth of perception, he rejected the Stoic concept of grasping as dogmatic, and made "impossibility of grasping" the principle. In real life, he could be called a soft skeptic in that he used "what makes sense" as the standard for action.
